Medical Delivery Rover
3rd Place - Unmanned Systems Canada 2021
UBC Uncrewed Aircraft Systems - Payload
The rover is paired with a drone to aid in delivering medical packages from a clinic to remote locations and operated via a radio frequency transmitter. With a live First Person View video stream, the rover can both lift up to 1 kg packages and identify their contents using a QR scanner.
/My Contributions
Retrieval Systems
Below are some of my early design sketches that were presented to our team as potential solutions to the competition challenge of medical package retrieval and delivery
Chassis with front panel to support medical package and grippers with rubber ridges for increased friction
Lifters with thin films to duck under the package and free-rotating rollers to pick up the package by closing the claws
Joint grippers with front ramp to rest the medical package during delivery and a slide-down mechanism for drop off
Chassis with treads and claws that move laterally to squeeze the package and vertically to move package to a support platform
I led the modelling, prototyping, testing, and iteration of the retrieval systems. All parts and assemblies are designed with SolidWorks and optimized for 3D printing
First draft mechanism for retrieval systems: Claws (red) move in and out with a linear actuator. Arms (orange) controlled by a servo attached to the chassis floor
Testing for initial retrieval systems design. Problem: the many shafts misalign easily, which prevents the arms from sliding properly to open and close the claws
Iteration: no shafts and long arms, linear actuator connect directly to claw, servo horn connected directly to the retrieval system
QR Code Detection & Scanning
I wrote the code to process the video feed from the integrated FPV camera to detect and scan the QR code on each medical package to find the target one for delivery,
Fun with SolidWorks Rendering!
I prepared the rendered photos of our drone as part of our design paper and presentation to the judges, which won 2nd Place in phase one of the competition
Working in a team of passionate students striving everyday towards the same goal helped me grow a love for engineering that is beyond the nuts and bolts
